Lap-Band® System Gastric Band Surgery

LAP-BAND® System surgery is the simplest, and least invasive surgical weight loss procedure currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is placed through a surgical procedure, which positions the adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small gastric pouch. The pouch allows the patient to eat smaller amounts of food to achieve a sensation of fullness that occurs quickly and lasts for an extended period of time.

Low BMI Weight Loss Surgery

Until recently, the FDA’s guidelines would allow the LAP-BAND® System to be performed only in those patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 with no obesity-related health conditions (co-morbidities), or those with a BMI of 35 or over who were afflicted with at least one co-morbidity. However, the FDA has recently issued new guidelines for the procedure, and has approved the LAP-BAND® System in patients who have a body mass index of 30, plus at least one obesity-related co-morbidity condition, such as heart disease, Type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. These new guidelines make it possible for more than 26 million patients to qualify for LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding and start losing weight effectively after all other traditional methods have failed.

The LAP-BAND® System is now the only bariatric surgery technique that is FDA-approved for use in patients with a 30-35 body mass index and at least one obesity-related health condition.

The LAP-BAND® System – Adjustable to Suit Your Needs

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, placed during LAP-BAND® System surgery offered by Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm, is uniquely constructed to be both durable and easy to adjust to a patient’s weight loss and lifestyle needs. The interior of the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band consists of an inflatable tube that your surgeon will fill to the desired volume with saline solution. The port, or access point to the tube, is placed just beneath the skin of the abdomen during surgery. Adjustments to the tightness of the band can be made in response to increased or decreased rates of weight loss and special circumstances such as pregnancy. Tightening the band increases the restriction around the stomach, and reduces the amount of food you can consume. To change the tightness of the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, the doctor inserts a very fine needle into the port to either inject more saline to further inflate the tube or draw saline out if the band is too constrictive. Adjustments can be made in a quick visit to one of our offices.

Gastric Banding Adjustments under Fluoroscopy

Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm are pleased to announce the use of fluoroscopy to assist in post-operative gastric band adjustments..

The purpose of this technology is to perform an upper GI study while concurrently tightening the band. This allows for a more accurate fill in terms of satiety with meals and avoidance of obstructive complaints. This ultimately reduces the number of fills a patient requires following their surgery. In addition, adjustments under fluoroscopy enable the patient to actually visualize their gastric banding device. Fluoroscopy assisted fills also aid in providing expedited quality care for patients referred to our practice who have had their band placed at another facility (outside of New York or even outside the United States).Fluoroscopy assisted band adjustments can dramatically improved post-operative care our band patients now receive.
